Vispārīga informācija
Here you'll find a snapshot of the rules you need when driving across Europe. Every country sets its own speed limits, alcohol thresholds, winter-tyre dates and required-equipment checklist — always open the country page you're heading to for the precise figures and fines.
Ātruma ierobežojumi
- Built-up areas: 50 km/h (30 km/h zones common in residential streets since 2024 reform) - Outside built-up areas (N-roads, autoweg): 80 km/h; some N-roads marked 100 km/h - Motorways (autosnelweg / A-roads): 100 km/h between 06:00 and 19:00, 130 km/h between 19:00 and 06:00 — unique daytime/nighttime split since 2020 to reduce NOx emissions - Light vans ≤ 3.5 t and motorcycles: same as cars - Daytime running lights are recommended but not legally mandatory
Alkohols un telefona lietošana
- Alcohol limit: 0.5‰ (BAC) for experienced drivers - Novice drivers (< 5 years' licence): 0.2‰ - 0.5–0.8‰: contravention, €350 fine + 4 demerit points - Above 0.8‰: criminal offence, fines up to ~€1,200 + licence suspension + possible prison - Above 1.3‰: mandatory alcohol-behaviour course (Lema/EMA cursus) at the driver's expense - Holding a mobile phone while driving: €430 fine + 3 points — one of the highest in Europe
Ziemas aprīkojums
- Winter tyres are NOT legally mandatory in the Netherlands (flat coastal country with mild winters) - All-season tyres are common; M+S or 3PMSF recommended November–March if you drive into the Alpine countries afterward - Snow chains are virtually never needed within NL - Studded tyres are PROHIBITED in the Netherlands - Reduced visibility (fog, heavy rain): use rear fog lights only when visibility is below 50 m
Obligātais aprīkojums
- Warning triangle: NOT legally required in the Netherlands (uniquely among major EU countries — hazard lights are expected instead) - High-visibility reflective vest: NOT legally required (recommended, especially for cyclists) - First-aid kit: NOT mandatory - Spare tyre or repair kit: not mandatory but strongly recommended - Documents: driving licence (rijbewijs), vehicle registration (kentekenbewijs), insurance proof (verzekeringsbewijs / WA) - For trucks > 3.5 t after 1 July 2026: registered Vrachtwagenheffing OBU is mandatory before entering the toll network
Pasažieru drošība
- Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, front and rear - Children under 135 cm AND under 18 kg must use an approved child restraint (autostoeltje) - Children under 12 may sit in the front seat only if properly secured in a child seat or seat belt - Motorcycle: helmet is mandatory for both rider and pillion passenger - Daytime running lights on motorcycles year-round - Pets must be restrained (carrier, harness, or rear cage) — failure to do so can void insurance in case of an accident
Toll roads in the Netherlands 2026 — free for cars, two toll tunnels
The Netherlands has NO general motorway toll and NO vignette for passenger cars — the entire ~2,800 km of A-roads (Autosnelwegen) is FREE for vehicles ≤ 3.5 t. The only per-crossing tolls in the country are two tunnels: the Westerscheldetunnel in Zeeland (~€5.50 for cars) and the Kiltunnel near Dordrecht (~€2.10 for cars). The Dutch road authority is Rijkswaterstaat (RWS); each tunnel is operated by its own concession (NV Westerscheldetunnel, Wegschap Tunnel Dordtse Kil).
Vehicle categories: Cars, motorcycles, vans, motorhomes (≤ 3.5 t) — free on all motorways, only pay if crossing one of the two tunnels. Goods vehicles > 3.5 t — until June 2026 use the EU Eurovignet; from 1 July 2026 Netherlands launches the Vrachtwagenheffing (Truck Charge) — a distance-based, GPS-tracked per-km toll on motorways and ~140 selected N-roads. Rates start at ~€0.15/km (Class 1, EURO 6) and rise to ~€0.29/km for articulated lorries. Buses are NOT subject to Vrachtwagenheffing.
How to pay the tunnels: at the Westerscheldetunnel you can pay at the toll booth in cash, by debit / credit card (contactless accepted), or use a t-tag transponder for faster passage and a discount. At the Kiltunnel the same — booth or t-tag. The Dutch t-tag is interoperable with the Belgian Liefkenshoektunnel tag, so a single transponder works for all three barrier tunnels in the Low Countries. Buy / register the t-tag online at westerscheldetunnel.nl.
Example tunnel costs in 2026 (single crossing): Westerscheldetunnel — Cat 1 (car ≤ 2 m): €5.50; Cat 2 (van / camper > 2 m): €8.40; motorcycle: €2.85. Kiltunnel — car: €2.10; van / camper: €4.00; motorcycle: €1.05. Subscription discounts available for frequent users at both tunnels.
Fines for skipping the Westerscheldetunnel toll start at €100; ANPR cameras capture the plate at both portals. The Kiltunnel uses staffed booths so evasion is harder. Cross-border enforcement under EU Directive 2015/413 means a Dutch toll-evasion notice can reach your home country anywhere in the EU + UK + Switzerland.
Tourist tips: the Netherlands is one of the best European countries for free road-tripping — A1 (Amsterdam → German border), A2 (Amsterdam → Maastricht), A12 (The Hague → Arnhem → Düsseldorf direction) are all free. Westerscheldetunnel is on the route from Belgium (Antwerp area) toward the Zeeland coast — the alternative free route goes via Antwerp ring road and adds ~30 min. Kiltunnel is a small shortcut between A29 and A16 near Dordrecht. Winter tyres are NOT mandatory in the Netherlands. The country has milieuzones (low-emission zones) in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and many other cities — older diesels may be restricted; check zonecheck.amsterdam.nl or local council pages before driving in.
