  • Speed Limits

    - Built-up areas: 50 km/h - Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h - Expressways (gyorsforgalmi út): 110 km/h - Motorways (autópálya): 130 km/h - Vehicles over 3.5 t on motorways: 80 km/h - Daytime running lights are mandatory outside built-up areas year-round

  • Alcohol and Phone Use

    - Alcohol limit: 0.0‰ — zero tolerance, the strictest level in the EU - Any detectable alcohol triggers an administrative fine of up to 300 000 HUF and demerit points - Driving while intoxicated is a criminal offence with substantial fines and licence revocation - Holding a mobile phone while driving is forbidden; hands-free is allowed - Mobile-phone fine: 25 000–50 000 HUF plus demerit points

  • Winter Equipment

    - Winter tyres are NOT mandatory in Hungary, but strongly recommended in winter conditions - Tyres marked M+S or 3PMSF are accepted as winter tyres - Snow chains must be used only when the road sign explicitly mandates them - Tread depth at least 1.6 mm year-round; police can impose chains in heavy snow - The driver is fully liable if a non-winter tyre causes loss of control on snow/ice

  • Required Equipment

    - Warning triangle - High-visibility reflective vest, kept inside the cabin (mandatory for the driver when leaving the vehicle on a road outside built-up areas) - First-aid kit - Spare wheel + jack and wrench, OR an approved tyre-repair / sealant kit - Vehicles over 3.5 t and buses: also a fire extinguisher - Documents to keep with you: driving licence and vehicle registration certificate (forgalmi engedély) - Insurance: a third-party motor insurance certificate from an EU/EEA country (plus UK, CH, NO, IS, LI) is valid in Hungary. Drivers from any other country must carry a Green Card (zöldkártya).

  • Passenger Safety

    - Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, front and rear - Children under 150 cm must travel in an approved child restraint, suitable for their weight - Children under 3 may not travel without a proper child seat - Rearward-facing seats are not allowed in front of an active passenger airbag - Helmets are mandatory for both rider and pillion passenger on a motorcycle
