Speed Limits
- Built-up areas: 50 km/h - Outside built-up areas: 90 km/h - Expressways (silnice pro motorová vozidla): 110 km/h - Motorways (dálnice): 130 km/h - Vehicles over 3.5 t on motorways/expressways: 80 km/h - Daytime running lights are mandatory year-round
Alcohol and Phone Use
- Alcohol limit: 0.0‰ — zero tolerance, the strictest level in the EU - Under 0.3‰: administrative offence, fine and demerit points - Over 0.3‰: criminal offence, fine 25 000–50 000 CZK and 1–2 year licence ban - Holding a mobile phone while driving is forbidden; hands-free is allowed - Mobile-phone fine: roughly 1 000–2 000 CZK plus demerit points
Winter Equipment
- Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 November to 31 March on snow, ice or frozen roads, and any time the temperature is ≤ 4 °C with snow/ice expected - Minimum tread depth on winter tyres: 4 mm - Tyres marked M+S or 3PMSF are accepted as winter tyres - Snow chains must be used only when the road sign explicitly mandates them - Vehicles over 3.5 t: at least one driving axle on winter tyres in the same period
Required Equipment
- Warning triangle - High-visibility reflective vest, kept inside the cabin - First-aid kit compliant with the Czech standard - Spare wheel, jack and wheel wrench, or an approved tyre-repair / sealant kit - Vehicles over 3.5 t and buses: also a fire extinguisher - Documents to keep with you: driving licence and vehicle registration certificate (technický průkaz) - Insurance: a third-party motor insurance certificate from an EU/EEA country (plus UK, CH, NO, IS, LI) is valid in Czech Republic. Drivers from any other country must carry a Green Card (zelená karta).
Passenger Safety
- Seat belts are mandatory in every seat, front and rear - Children under 150 cm AND under 36 kg must travel in an approved child seat - Children under 12 may not sit in the front seat unless properly secured in a child seat - Children up to 9 kg / 9 months must use a rearward-facing seat - Helmets are mandatory for both rider and pillion passenger on a motorcycle
